Cub Shifter broke

Is it common for the shifter on late 40's cub's to break where the roll pin holds the spring onto the lever? Mine the other day popped right off in my hand. You could see it had been cracked and weak for some time.

Looking for a used/new replacement there seems to be some differing info out there. Difference seems to come down to pan seat vs deluxe seat. Mine has a pan seat so I need a straight lever. However can a used straight lever shifter from say a late 50's early 60's yellow cub be used on a late 40's cub?

Thanks.

Friend of mine used a pipe nipple, slid it over the break, welded it, re-drilled the pin hole, painted it up. It's better than new & works like new. "Correct police" may not approve, but I don't care. jal-SD

The way the shift handle is held in the cover changed at some point in production but any Cub shifter will work in any Cub, lever considerations aside.

The bent handle shifter will work just fine on a regular Cub with a pan seat. A little strategic heat and bending will allow a straight handle shifter to work on a deluxe seat Cub.

It is fairly common for them to break and lots of them have been rewelded right over top of the spring. The 42 cub that I have was that way, so I cut it apart and repaired it correctly. I welded a new piece of rod to the top and drilled it for the pin. People were probably a little too aggressive with shifting the poor little tractors and the shifter rod was only 1/2" in the first place if I remember correctly. The hole drilled through for the pin gave it a weak point below a lot of leverage with the long shifter.
