IHC Ether Starting Aid

My ether starting aid on a 574 has not worked in years. Today I shall try to check it out. Anyone have any tips? I know simple test procedures but have never worked on one of these, I suppose it works on full battery voltage. and I think it has three wires.

An easy place to start might be to supply 12 volts via jumper wire from the positive battery post to the NON grounded wire connector on the injector.
If it clicks, the electrical part of the injector mechanism is fine. If no click, verify that the unit is adequately grounded. This can also be accomplished with another jumper wire. If neither of these wiring workarounds work, there?s a good chance the unit is shot.
Now, find out if 12 volts is indeed being delivered when you push the button. Note that some were wired in series with the starter solenoid, so it?s possible your push button won?t work unless the starter is turning.
Another problem we had on semis was the injector nozzle inside the intake manifold would get plugged from debris which got in during a canister change. Disconnect the small tube from the injector and try it again. If fluid squirts out, the nozzle may be clogged or the tube leaks or got disconnected.

Also I think its less harmful if its sprayed into air cleaner to get more distributed instead of the direct shot into the air intake. I found out it helps start better that way too instead of locking up.

Years ago we had to replace the top part with the solenoid in it as the solenoid was open circuit, see link to 495 Ether Starting.
On the 574 parts manual it showed the ether starting solenoid by the part number referred to a link that didn't work so went to 495 a newer model that gave part number 87105749 for the solenoid.

If you Google 87105749 you will see several different vendors.
I sort of remember that the solenoid on ours wasn't replaceable and had to replace the complete top assembly but I do believe the replacement part the solenoid is replaceable.

IIR correctly there are 2 wire: -12V with Generator, +12V with Alternator and Ground also can't remember if push button switch on the dash supplies voltage or ground to the Ether solenoid.

I will not get involved in the Ether starting discussion, there are some simple rules to avoid damage to the engine.

There are times I wish the one for my IH584 was still on it but it fell victim to the fire the tractor had. But as long as I can plug it in say and hour before I want to use it I have not needed it.

Used in moderation, ether is not harmful at all to your engine. Technically these days it's "starting fluid" as it has very little ether in it, if any at all.

It's the people who hold down the button or run an entire can into an engine that are hard on engines.
