I recently accquired a 46 Farmall m. I?m certain that it has never been repainted. There is yellow paint showing in some places under what red is left. Was that yellow some sort of primer IH used or did that old red age by turning yellow? My other question is the serial number on the engine is 1400 numbers ahead of the chassis, is that common. I know they don?t always match but that seems like a lot!

In 46 the engine numbers run 1370 to around 1400 lower than chassis numbers. Some of the paint had a yellow tint after time, don't know what you have.

That 248 engine was used in several applications. Stands to reason that the SNs don't line up.IH bought paint from several scources. Usually the cheapest one. Most paints faded to pink, then brown. But depending on the vendor, and the 'recipe',yellow is quite possible.A lot can happen in 74 years.

Looked at the numbers on a 46 I had once. Tractor, 114046X1, Engine, 112716X1. Close to yours? 248 engine blocks put in M tractors with serial number prefix FBKM started staying lower than chassis numbers when the MD chassis started and they kept getting lower than chassis numbers as M went to end of production.

Original paint on '46 models faded to a kinda orange-red or yellow-red-orange color. Many were repainted in the '50's & I remember seeing a lot of them when I was a kid. My uncle got a new '46 under "veteran preference" regulations when he was discharged from the Navy after WWII. He, my dad & grandpa (Uncles dad) farmed together for a couple of years after the war. His H faded to a different color than my dad's '44 H did. I still have my Dad's '44 H & my cousin still has his Dad's 46 H. Cousin had his dads repainted a few years age, it was still the faded orange-red color. I told him he should of not had it repainted, as the faded color was unique & I didn't think there were many still around that color. Saw a "W-9" in a salvage yard in Neb. on the way home from Colorado just a few weeks age. Neb Cowman, what do you know about the odd colored '46's? (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)
