manifold question----update

Well I changed my mind on replacing the manifold. Thought I would try this first. The threads were almost smooth and I figured they were ruined. I started with a tiny punch and a hammer tapping on the threads and the carbon buildup began to chip off. I spent about five hours going around in circles and wound up with very acceptable threads. I bought a long pipe nipple and cut it in half. I sawed vertically down the threads every 45 degrees and used it like a pipe tap, slightly bending the threads in a little so it would start more easily. I ran it in and out quite a few times and cleaned the threads. I bought a small container of JB Weld extreme heat epoxy and used it for pipe dope. Pipe is installed in the manifold and tightened up well. 24 hours til the epoxy cures. Express your opinions! Thanks, Ellis

good job! determination pays off. I have tapped a few and it can take a few hrs. with proper tools cutting that carbon and rust.

I did exactly as you did on my SMTA. I turned pipe(tap) in to where I got resistance, then backed off. Back and forthe until I had enough usable thread to hold pipe with muffler. Since then, when I have had hood off I have tightened pipe a little more. That big muffler puts quite a bit of leverage on pipe. I didn't use JB weld but mine works good. I can't see any reason you would have to take that pipe out. Mine has been holding fine for about 10 years I think

I did mine the same way except I smeared valve grinding compound on the pipe threads, then back and forth forever. I didn't use epoxy or anything else, it's still solid.
