International 660 hydraulic failure

My 660 hydraulics and power steering faded to total failure. I found the filter totally clogged, cleaned it and the cavity it resides in, found the oil supply pipe and followed it into the main transmission but still didnt find the end. Where does this pipe pick up the hydraulic oil from, transmission, differential or further back?

I am hoping to avoid replacing the pump.

Unfortunately you can hope all you want but most likely that's what you're going to have to do. Starving the pump for oil likely burned it up.

All you can do is put a new filter in, change the oil, and cross your fingers.

Even if you knew where the pump picked up the oil from you can't see in there anyway, and all the oil is shared between the transmission, TA housing, differential housing, and final drives.

When you dump the oil to change it you will see if it's sludgy.
 
If the pump is worn, packing it with petroleum jelly might allow it to pull enough vacuum to prime. Good luck. Jim
 
I realize the blocked filter may well have caused to pump to run dry and start eating itself.
I have drained about 13 litres of a milky type oil from a small plug almost directly under the steering box and put about 22 litres back into the compartment housing the main transmission gearing thinking the transmission and differential had a oil passage between apart from the pipe to the hydraulic filter (that I found when looking for oil reserve). I also drained about 2 litres from a plug just behind the clutch cavity but cant find a fill point to replenish this.
There is another drain plug near where the tow hitch pivots but I havent seen anything the looks like a fill/level point so am reluctant to drain that yet. There is also a drain and fill point at the pto shaft but that appears to be a separate unit with different oil to the drains more forward.

As I stated previously, the oil is shared between all the compartments. There is one fill point, a plate on the deck of the tractor opposite of the shifting lever.

There are multiple drain points, which you have found. These are because a couple of quarts/liters will remain in low points near those drains. Either the rear or the middle drain will get most of the oil out.

If you pull the rear drain now, most of your new oil will run out.

Just run it, the oil will be distributed to where it needs to go by the motion of the transmission.
 
think its about 17 gallons of oil u need for a change. better get that milky stuff out of there. the actual drain is at the rear of tractor. your fill is remove the plate right of gear shift. oil level is at plug on left side of trans.
 
Rustered you are saying the drain is the plug near the tow hitch pivot that drains all 3 compartments and the fill point is the plate with 3 bolts that uncovers the top edge of a crown wheel. I did see a square headed plug a few inches up on the left of the gear case and used that as a level guide the other day.

that is all correct. you can drive the tractor up on some planks or what ever to get the front higher up for a better drain. to flush it add some cheap hyd. oil with some diesel like 5 gallons or so and drive it around a bit but not a lot. then drain again. plus drain those other places you mentioned.
 
I pulled the pump yesterday, now looking for a replacement but so far getting prices around the $2000 for hydraulic and power steer pump as both are as bad as each other. I did find a used unit but am wary as there is no way of knowing if it is much better than what I already have.

By the way I checked online with partstore.caseih.com, and from the dealer you can get a reman main pump for $600 even and a reman power steering pump for $695. That's $1300, a far cry from the $2000 you quoted.
 
As I am in Aus and my $ only buys 66 cents in the US then shipping. This site lists the pumps a lot cheaper than your numbers but still converts to near $800 each plus shipping will make a big hole in my $2000.

I pulled the pump out and apart, seals are broken, bushes and housings are worn in both the hydraulic pump and power steer pump.

Put the new pumps on yesterday, hydraulics worked as designed but the power steer ram leaks and would only turn left (50% win).
Pulled the ram down today to find the shaft seal only half there and the shaft missing chrome in several places and the cylinder with a few scratches.
So basically now looking for a steering ram.
