656 Grill Spring

Had bar type grill out, found maybe half inch piece of spring all rusted up. Spring is NA from CaseIH. Now, questions, does spring suppose to be long enough to set on the cotter pin? Mcmaster-Carr has a 2 inch, 1/4 diameter, rated at 21 lbs force, would that be enough force to hold grill in place?

Yes, spring should be long enough to set on the cotter pin. When installed in the grill, my spring is about 1/4" below the tubing which of course could be from 50 years of applied compression. 21 lb force from an alternate spring is more than plenty.
