Can anyone tell me where I can find a good used 4-1/8 piston. And does anyone know if you can just buy one set of rings for it, or do you guys recommend to re ring the complete engine while it is down. This tractor sits most of the time, only use it maybe 2 or 3 time's a year

Hasting catalog list rings individually for 4 1/8 inch bore. Various widths, top, second or oil ring individually.

I would replace all the pistons and sleeves while it is apart. Also check crank and replace rod and main bearings and have crank ground if needed. Then you will have an engine that will last for years if the job is done properly. Like Hayfarmer said it will cost almost a much for 1 piston sleeve assembly as a kit because you need a gasket set and probably some other thing that come in the kit. I get my kits at Agkits always free shipping and top quality components. IMO

Like Jim said , ya really need to know who's piston it WAS as because there were somany different ones made and not all the same . I have replaced just one BUT i know who's piston it was and i could get one of the same . sleeves they are pretty much the same . You could have perfect circle , you could have M&W , could be Clevite maybe Zolner (sp) could be a Tisco set and god only knows who made them . You may have three forged pistons and now you end up with a CAST piston and it will be lighter and with that in there it will shake the fillings out of your teeth.

I have not removed the piston as of now, the sleeve has some grooves running vertical on it, so assuming the piston will have some damage also. The tractor ran great, it had developed a skip , changed plugs, points, condenser cap wires rotary button, rebuilt carb, Ran a compression test,# 1 cylinder was low, readjusted valves. then performed leak test, that cylinder would not hold pressure. Removed head too grind valve and check any problems with it, that is when I discovered the sleeve damage. So thanks too all of you guys that have responded

Ok this info has no documentation and you are receiving it free. As for the pistons having to be the same weight here is what someone did that I read on a tractor forum and it may or may not have been YT. Gentleman had a 4 cyl. 830 Case, one cylinder was bad (4.375” bore). He had a good piston and sleeve out of a 730 (4.125” bore). Through it in there. Said when he got it running he couldn’t tell one lick of difference from how it ran from before except slightly less power. As the first sentence said your mileage may vary.

several years ago when I got my SMTA it had one stuck piston. I hadn't visited this site or read about unsticking pistons so ended up breaking a piston and liner removing it. I searched for one of each but seems like the price ended up being pretty close to the kit.

what happened that u need one piston? its your tractor so you should have the info on the engine... was it using oil? are the plugs fouled or burning clean? basically how much oil does the engine use between oil changes is a good thing to know so you get a proper answer. if its a once in a while use tractor then a patch job would be ok. lots of old junkers running out there needing an overhaul. I do have that piston but its not the best of shape. too mush clearance in ring lands.

We need to know what it weighs and the dome (if any) to run without vibration the replacement meeds to be within a few grams of the others. A new set might be best. With new rings. For $389 from this site (Part No: BIFH1164) See parts above. You get them, and gaskets. Jim
