Memorial H Project - Transmission Countershaft Success

Hello all - thought you would like to get an update on the transmission countershaft removal. The coupler nut suffered as well as the front shaft bearing,
but we got the shaft out without too much carnage. I am going to replace the shaft due to the several heating cycles that it was subject to in order to try
to remove the nut.

Got a new/used shaft coming with coupler and front and rear bearings. Going back together it will get all new gaskets, seals, a new 3rd/4th drive gear and
4th/5th slider. All bearings in the rear end seem really nice, and were most likely replaced when the rear end was tore down to braze the crack in the rear.
I am also replacing the entire rear casing due to the crack expanding towards the right side where the axle housing bolts to the housing (the red circled
area), and having more issues on the original. The replacement is not too far off from the original, though. They were cast about 12 months apart.

Transmission Teardown SUCCESS

That s too bad about the nut being stuck and the crack in the case. You are doing it right though. Sometimes you just have to get new parts.
It s amazing some of the farmer "fixes" you have to undo to these old tractors.

That has to be the poorest job of brazing I have ever seen! I used to Vee out the crack & braze it laying under the tractor. You know you are getting a good bond then.

Agreed! No heat, looks like he tried to do it with a propane bottle. Ellis

Guess I just got lucky when I resealed mine this summer. Just took a very light tap with a hammer and the nut came right off. My hardest part was I had to take a belly mower off and put it back on get it all lined up. Lol. Keep posting, I am enjoying watching your progress.
