The original subject was "Re: Super A antifreeze coolant question".

I recently purchased my first Farmall Super A, a 1951 model. Today I decided to change the antifreeze since the coolant in the radiator looked bad. I purchased a name brand 50/50 antifreeze/water mix, as I was told there would be the advantage of not having to mix concentrate with distilled water. I drained the old coolant and then added the new 50/50 mix. The operator manual said the capacity would be 13 quarts (3.25 U.S. gallons). I was surprised that the tractor took only about 2.75 gallons of the new 50/50 mix instead of my anticipated 3.25 gallons. My brother-in-law suggested that some of the old coolant may be in the engine block. I rode the tractor around the farm for about half an hour and let it simply idle for another half hour or so. The water in the radiator got hot, but the level did not go down to allow me to add the remaining new 50/50 mix to put the amount to the operator manual?s stated 3.25 gallons. Any ideas?

Yeah, that's plausable, anyway next spring when it's warmer maybe you can flush it, with some 40% active vinegar and get it cleaned out. That what i use to because i don't have good soft water! It's to late in the season now to fool with it here!

I don't think there is one either, just take the bottom radiator hose off! But what i was thinking u might have 2 quarts of crude and calcium buildup in the bottom of the block! A good way to get it out of there is with 40% vinegar acidity, that will dissolve it, leave it in their for a half hour and start it up, get it warm, drain it. Don't get it on your clothes, it will be stained until you threw them away. Regular store bought vinegar is 5% acidity, i got mine threw Home Depot, they shipped it too my door!

My super A has a drain plug on the left hand side of the engine near the front. I can't remember if it's screws in the block or the hose housing, but you can drain the coolant without pulling a hose.

Also, should I put in as much of the 40 percent vinegar in the radiator as I can after I drain out my new antifreeze mix? Thanks for your comments!
