TA on a 574

I'm just getting to grips with a slipping TA on a 574. I've got the top of the gear box and from what I can see there is very little to no friction material on the disks. But I see two sets of discs, one at the front of the TA carrier and one set at the back.
Question
Which set of discs does what ?

(quoted from post at 20:17:44 10/14/19) Hi, you can download service manuals from 574 from here:

https://www.redpowermagazine.com/forums/topic/121219-d239-674-engine-manual-pdf/

Thanks for that - it's going to be useful.

However a quick-ish read through the TA part it talks about the direct drive side which is rear of the clutch pack but doesn't say (as far as I can see) what the front and rear clutch plate groups actually do. Any help with this?

Sorry cannot provide much help on individual T/A clutches. I do know it is very difficult to determine if the HI side of T/A is slipping on it is the main engine clutch slipping.
Quick test for engine clutch, if Lo T/A is good, (this is a mechanical sprag clutch and does not depend on tractor hydraulics) then go up a steep hill in 4th Hi range and Lo T/A and apply brakes and see if
engine bogs down or if engine clutch slips.
For the HI T/A about the only thing you can check externally is the hydraulic pressure from the T/A pump at the test plug in bottom of T/A pump housing (235-270 PSI). If pressure is good and HI T/A is still
slipping then probably HI T/A is bad, but if pressure is low then investigate T/A pump shims and spring for regulator.

The main engine clutch should be OK as the friction plate has been replaced (pressure plate looked OK) With the TA the sprag clutch is also blown.

This tractor is used by the world and his dog and the TA has failed through abuse. My plan is to lock up the Hi side clutch plates to effectively remove the TA option (and future problems) by locking it in Hi. So it is a question of which set of plates to lock up to achieve this.

FWIW, the TAs in the 74 and 84 series tractors were regarded as some of the worst ones IH used. If the TA is not something that you use regularly, you might want to research ways to bypass or block it out instead of repairing it. Might be cheaper to do so and eliminate future problems.
