W6 Mccormick newbbie question

What is the small round tank on the right side at the back of the engine used for on a W6? It's a 1946 model. Looks like there used to be a line hooked to the bottom.

its a gas tank for starting on the distillate models. the early ones from the forty's have these tanks. once the engine warms up u switch to distillate for working, plus need shutters to keep engine temp pretty warm.

I only ran my F20 on gas and it ran fine. Did use a lot of fuel, though.

well yes they will run on gas. plus u will never be working it hard all day long anyhow.
