Fuel tank in 656 Gas

Does the fuel tank in a 656 gas have a strainer inside the tank and can you
remove it The motor seems to run out of fuel and stops, Wait a minute and it starts up. Pulling choke out makes it run longer for about 30 seconds I have took the lines off from the carburetor fuel bowl. Blown thru , Seems all clear but not letting the tank flow good

Thanks in advance

No but a chunky piece of detritus could block the entire hole. Is the screen at the carb clean (not in the line, in the fitting) and is the passage from the line to the needle and seat clear? Jim

The neighbor's that i help in the fall, have a 1555 Oliver, they use it on a 13 inch 70 foot auger, sometimes it pulled good, and worse when the fuel tank was low. they found a cap off a bottle of HEET,or something similar, they fished that out of there, runs good again!

I took the fuel bowl off and blew air up through the drain hole by turning on the pet cock. Seemed to be blowing in the tank

You think it could be the needle and seat or float?

Yes Sir. I took off the whole carb bowl including the screen and gasket, etc. The screen I took off is the first thing that the gas goes through before entering the fuel line to carb fuel bowl

Thanks Again

To clarify what Jim is talking about see the parts page in the link. It is showing a 560 carb because I could not get the 656 page to even show the engine. The two carbs are nearly identical except for the 656 uses a fuel solenoid on the main jet. Number 17 in the carb is the screen Jim wants you to check. This post is a little confusing because the identity of some items are not being called by there correct names. IH refers to the glass bowl under the tank as the ..strainer.. I have always called them ..sediment.. bowls. The bottom half of the carb is called the ..bowl assembly.. by IH. Or in general terms the carb fuel bowl. Something floating around in the tank blocking the inlet to the strainer under the tank could very well be your problem.

Did you take the cap off the tank, shine a light down in and actually LOOK?

You can blow backwards and that will push the crud off the fuel inlet in the tank, but as you drive around and use fuel the stuff will float back in and cover up the hole again. The only way to fix it is to remove the crud.

I know of one time a flake of solder was drifting around in a tank and occasionally getting sucked down over the outlet. Were it me, I'd unscrew the sediment bowl assembly, roll up a piece of screen wire a couple of inches long, and poke it into the top of the sediment bowl fixture before returning it to the tank. Worked for me. gm
