986 PTO problems

I have a 986 and was running a 15 foot batwing mower when I headed down a hill the PTO stopped turning, I turned to go sideways on the hill and it started working again? So I tried to finish up the field. it did this stop/start thing a few more times and now has quite all together.

That being said I have not owned it long, the man I bought it from said he thought the clutch was going out, it feels a little funny but pulls good ,I baled 200 bales with a JD467 on some hilly ground and has not slipped yet.

I just now ordered a manual, but any advise or info would be appreciated.
I had planed to paint it and put in a new clutch this winter, guess I will start a little earlier than I had planned.

The PTO requires HYTran oil to the level plug. It is probably low. Leaks to the outside are obvious. Leaks to the inside are less likely, but possible if the
breather is plugged up. Check the level first. Hytran only!!! Jim

my 986 did the same thing when pulling a bat wing mower, it world only do it going up and down a very step hill. I have mine over filled by 5 gals and do not have the problem anymore. I think there is a o ring bad or something wrong on the inside with the suction that does not show up till you are on a steep grade and gets air in it.

Like Jim said check you fluid level and get it to the full mark , then add five gallon to it. when you go down hill all the oil flows to the vary ft. of the transmissions and on a steep enough hill all the pick up tubes can come out of the oil and EVERYTHING can stop working Steering , brakes , and T.A plus the PTO as the pick up tube is mounted to the PTO unit it's self . IT is not uncommon for the pick up tube to become loose in it's holding bracket and the seal in my mind was a vary poor set up and they can suck air where the seal mounts to the PTO unit . The pick up tube can be damaged during removal or installation of the PTO unit .

going down steep hills the oil runs to the front off the transmission and the pickup tube for the pto pump sucks air this started in the 56 series.
sometimes the pickup tube loosens up. i would go with adding extra oil. just a few gallons should work.
