656 ta problem

The ta will only down shift under a load.
If baling hay and pull the ta to slow down
the lever will pull back like normal but
it doesn't shift down. If you push the
brakes and put a little load on then it
shifts down. It doesn't slip. What could
be the problem? Thanks for any help.

No expert but nothing wrong with TA. They will free wheel when down shifted when not under load. I was taught to never allow to free wheel as this will damage the over running clutch and damage the TA. They are designed to be shifted down when you have a place where you don,t have enough power to get thru a tough spot and need to down shift on the go or starting a heavy load and shifting up on the go. MY POOR OF SAYING what I was taught, but come on IHC People.

Sounds like there?s nothing wrong with it but there will be if you keep doing that. They?re designed for use under a heavy pulling load.

If you are expecting a "running into a wall" type reaction from downshifting the TA on a 656, that's not how it works.

As stated previously the TA on a 656 will freewheel if on a downhill or when being pushed by a load.

On the flat, there will be a bit of a pause where the tractor coasts before it slows down enough for the TA to catch and drive. This can go on for several seconds if you have enough momentum, which may make it seem like it is not shifting. Using the brakes to slow down is the correct course of action.

As long as it does not exceed the direct speed in that gear, no harm is done. Overspeeding the direct clutch at 2 or 3 times engine RPM is the issue. Jim

T/A clutch not releasing all the way, still engaged enough to drag. Get instructions on how to adjust the main clutch and t/a linkage. If you don't have a operators manual you should be able to find old posts about adjusting on YT. If the pressure plate is failing a adjustment may not help. Any oil leaking out of the t/a clutch compartment?
