When I bought my diesel 706 a couple years ago, it had an adapter that allowed the use of a spin-on oil filter. A good friend, who is a tractor mechanic, told me to remove the adapter and buy a canister since the spin-on would not do the job of cleaning the oil. Well, I did that, and it's really a pain to change the oil filter in the canister and get it not to leak. My question is, "Would the spin-on filter be good enough since the tractor is used at most 5 hours/month"?

I would use the spin on as long as the micron rating is the same or better. The micron rating should be printed on the filter box. The lower the micron rating the better the filter. .000039inches equals one micron most automotive oil filters are 10-25 micron. If the spin on you are using is a regular name (fram, AC, etc.) then it should be good enough for your IH.

Most of the newer tractors have gone to spin on filters. If its good enough for these tractors it should certainly work on your 706.

My brother has the spin on adapter on his 706, it has worked fine.

Thanks for both your comments. I will be switching back to the spin-on this week-end. Rick
