Oil Filter Gasket Question

I finally had my 1949 Farmall H running. We rode it on 3 different days for about 30 minutes each ride. The last ride, my wife noticed oil on the right side of the engine. The pressure was normally at 60 psi, but when I checked it, it was only 10 psi. I think and hope it is the Oil Filter Assembly. I removed the cover and found 2 separate rubber O-Rings. The filter was replaced recently, but I wonder if 2 O-Rings is normal? Should I put it back together with 1 or 2 O-Rings? Any recommendations on How Tight should I tighten to Top Bolt of the Assembly? Again, thanks for the help Kevin

It should only have one O-Ring. They are often left in when the filter is changed because they hide in the groove. I use an ice pick or a small screw driver to dig them out. You should get a new one with a new filter.

I am doubtful however, that it is the cause of your oil pressure issues.

I didn't notice a copper ring on the bolt? I think a lot of oil came out of the engine and I hope that's why the pressure is so low. I plan on putting the Oil Filter Assembly back together and adding oil and hope the pressure returns. As a side note, the Ignition Coil had drips of oil on the bottom. I really don't know where the Oil is coming out, but will see when I start it, this weekend, after I replace the Oil.

My 1950 H was sorta similar. I had to really dig in that groove with a pick to get the old O-ring out. Then install a new one. Only one. I finally settled on using 10W-40 and it keeps pressure up pretty well. But if you run a thin oil, it will really drop pressure when it is hot and just idling along.

The ignition coil is oil filled so if oil is actually coming out of the coil and not engine oil that
got blown onto coil, you may have a coil problem in the future. That usually only happens when they
over heat like from ign switch being on while not running, points closed, or excessive current flow
through coil from converted to 10 volt system and use of improper coil or ballast resistor.

Far as oil pressure, was that low pressure at low engine speed or moderate rpm's. If at higher
rpm's I think you may very well have a problem now due to lack of lubrication.

As already said only the one. I don't usually change them for a few oil changes and they don't leak. If your oil level is good I would suspect the gasket on the bottom of the oil pump is bad and needs the plate cleaned up to flat then new gasket. Will need to pull the oil pan for this.

There is a significant amount of oil on the outside of the engine. The oil pressure was normally 60 psi from idle to full throttle. I did not check the oil level, yet. I removed the oil filter and it is a CASE Filter Element 376374R91. I will add oil after installing the filter with one gasket and hope that is where all the oil was coming from? I will let this thread know what I find out this weekend.

I put the oil filter assembly back on with 1 gasket, I had to add 4 quarts of Oil so it was low. I started the engine up and Oil pressure return to its normal 60 psi at idle and full throttle. I watched for a oil leak but did not see any. I rode it in 4th gear for about 15 minutes, oil pressure was steady at 60 psi and after the ride, I still did not see any external oil? I will keep a close watch on the oil level and pressure.
