H Steering.......

How can I pop the steering sector gear loose from the upper bolster shaft on an H?

It's a 360 degree gear, and all I want to do is turn it 180 degrees so it's meshing fresh teeth.

I'm thinking if I jacked the front end up just a tad and tapped on the upper end of the shaft after loosening the nut that holds the gear on the shaft it might pop loose.

the only other one of these I've had occasion to flip was on an M, and that gear was loose when I took the nut off.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Don't remember now I got my H loose, your idea sounds good, the only recommendation I'd make is not to hit on the threaded end, leave the nut on just loose, and hit on the nut.

With the front up some like you plan use a wood block on the top to protect the shaft from damage when you hit it. An Oak or Ash block set on endways will work best.

Soft aluminum, or brass can also be used as a buffer for thread protection. Heating the gear with a heat gun, or blow dryer (it will be messy from oil/grease Jim

I'll try it. I'll turn the nut even with the end of the shaft and tap on it with something that won't do any damage.

Thanks.

Jack the front up just off the ground and loosen the nut up about quater inch and take a wedge and drive it in between the bottom of the bolster and the casting on the front of the tractor. A few good locks with a maul and it will pop loose.

It worked!

I jacked the front end up about an inch, backed the nut off until it was EXACTLY flush with the end of the shaft, laid a piece of flat steel on the nut/shaft, gave it a couple of good solid whacks with a BFH and it popped loose.

I turned the gear 180 degrees and it made quite a difference in steering. Really tightened it up.
