Farmall C Pops Out of First

Howdy,

I have a C that I use for pulling. It has a C153 in it so there is about twice the normal horsepower running through the tranny. I am having trouble keeping it in first gear during a pull. I have replaced the shift ball springs with new ones from Case/IH and added some washers under them for extra force. It is better than it was, but I still get an occasional pop out of 1st. I also inspected the shift rails when I had the deck off and they look pretty good. Should I be looking at anything else in the tranny to combat this?

Main bearings and fit of the gears on the splines are potential issues. Wear on the gear teeth are another source of problems. Any visible wear will try to force the gears along the shaft. With that much power going through the gears, and the first gear a bit away from the pinion end bearing, and the pinion in the differential putting bending the opposite way, there could be shaft flexing as well. If it is only a puller using first only, Maybe the shafts could be reinforced to provide more strength/stiffness. The shifting forks/detents are designed only to put the gear in position, they should not have much stress on them under power. Jim

It sounds like you have a new winter project, rebuilding your tranny. I have seen a lot of pullers tie their shifters down with a trap strap when they hook.
