EXCITE WIRE END OF STORY

Many thanks to all who replied to my problem. After going through 2 more diodes and having them burn up I took the alt back and for $7.00 more she sold me a 1 wire put it on and all is well. I would have used a toggle sw on the 10S1 like I have on my own but this tractor will be driven my many different people and if you leave the sw on it will discharge the battery. We will see what happens. Thanks again Bob

I think I would change stores, the issues you had are not common. Remember to unhook the battery when not using the tractor for a month or more. One wires are always a little turned on. Jim

I had never heard that before, Jim! Could a person wire in a relay in the wire from the alternator to the battery, activated by the ignition switch, to eliminate this problem? The only old tractor we have is a Farmall C, and it works just fine with the 6 volt system. Was Albany pretty muddy?

I'm sorry I have not been following this thread(s) so not sure of all the details like what the diode is for in this set up.

Many years ago I converted my BN over to 12 volts and used a second hand 10SI alternator and it has worked just fine for something like 25 years or more and it does not have a diode installed any where. I just installed a simple oil pressure switch that turns it on once engine is running. It will sit all winter and start in the spring with not being on trickle charger or anything.

Batteries have lasted something like 10 years or more.
