more excite wire

I took the 2nd alt back and they gave me another one. I Installed it and connected the
excite wire to #1 terminal WITH the diode installed white band toward alt.It started
charing immediately 14.2volts then backed down to 13.2 reading taken at the battery Boy I
thought finally everything is fine When I turned the ign sw off the tractor kept running. I
removed the excite wire and it shut off. Iam using the hot side of coil for excite wire the
alt must be backfeeding the coil to keep it running I THought that's what the diode was for
I temporarily hooked the excite wire up to a toggle sw and it worked fine. Any ideas

My Case VAC is the same way. I have a diode in line and yet it will not shut down with the switch so I just turn off the gas and I have no problem other then not shutting off by the switch. But the other day it did after a moment shut off by the switch so maybe the diode is not as good as it should have been till now
 
Either you have the diode installed backward or it is bad (shorted).

Personally I prefer a warning lamp instead of a diode. It will prevent ignition backfeed, plus it works as a charging system warning lamp. It will light should the alternator fail, drive belt break, etc.

A small incandescent side marker or instrument panel lamp (#168 or similar) works fine.
 
Put a Delco 10 SI on the grandsons 560.
Usually just use a 10 Ohm 25 Watt resistor in
the excite wire, but had to put a diode in
the line also to prevent run-on.

You may have to do that also.

Diode might be marked backwards, or shorted. With it running and all connected, there should be system voltage on both sides of the diode (measured to ground) with it shut off, and ignition on, there should be no (or way less than system voltage) at the alternator side of the diode, and system voltage at the coil side. Jim
