excite wire again

I took my alternator back and got another one installed it(no problem like before) started
the motor and mom flashed the #1 terminal started charging about 14.5 volts. shut down and
connected the excite wire with diode white band toward alt started it an it now charges
16-17 volts battery is 12.5v I don't know if I did something or what happened.I guess I
will have to go back and see what they say at the store. I have installed to alt before but
always used a toggle sw first time for a diode.
PS what happens if nothing is connected to the @ 1 terminal?
Bob

#1 wire only has to have power of a moment to excite the alternator and then it can be unhooked and the alternator will keep charging. I have my IH584 set up so I touch the excite wire after I start it and then it lays unhook all the time I am running it

The Sense terminal #2 must be connected to the alt output terminal (the big one) for it to charge correctly. If the battery is fully charged, the running voltage should be close to 14.2 to 14.6 volts. If partially discharged it could be closer to 13 .6. If your #2 terminal is connected, and the battery charged, it is still a bad regulator. (if your volt meter can be relied on!!!!!) Jim

The excite wire will be hot when running on the alternator side of the diode, it needs to be insulated. Jim

will the alt charge without the excite wire connected to the #1 terminal. If it does what does that mean?

The #1 wire has to be connected to power for at least a moment to excite the alternator and if is isn't then it should not charge. If it does charge then the alternator has a problem

Are you taking Voltage readings up by the alternator
or back near the battery?
Voltage readings up by the alt. can be affected a lot
by the alternator since the Voltage regulator in the
alt. is a high frequency source.

If you bought the cheapest alternator at one of the "big box" auto parts stores, they have a high failure rate, at least in my experience. Went through three of them on one tractor before we got one that lasted more than a few minutes.

I have them check the alternator before I walk out of the store with t so I know it works
