IH 684 Starter

My brother in law and his dad just bought a 684 diesel. It grinds when attempting to start it and I told them to take the starter off and the ring gear looks fine still. However, it see on the CIH books that there are 3 types of starters that could be on this tractor, a bosch, lucas, and delco. I'm wondering if they have the right starter on it, but at this point I'm not sure what they have. How do you know what it SHOULD have on it?

The Lucas will have a whole different bolt pattern compared to the Delco. As for the Bosch I have no idea. Though I would guess it is more like the Lucas. It sounds like your starter drive is the culprit in this case though. They will not hold and let the gear grind against the flywheel.
