anyone got any info on Vicon 8 Ft disc mowers. Have a chance to buy one with a bad bearing on one disc and would like to know parts
availability and reliability of machine. Thanks in advance for any info.
 
They are very good machines, but if the one you're looking at is the old style, where you have to remove the complete bar, and take out a hundred bolts to split it, its a lot of work. If its the later 2400 style, each cutter head can be removed by taking out 5 bolts, renewing the bearings and seal, timing it back right, and ready to go. Parts are easy to get, but like any other piece of equip, it can be torn up. I've had 2, and wish I had a dollar for ever acre I've mowed with them.
 
If it is one of the 3 bladed ones, they are ok as long as you don't get in a hurry, Neighbor has one and if you try to drive very fast in heavy hay it will plug. I have a Kuhn and in heavy hay I can mow circles around him. I think parts are easy to get, and they are dependable. I think Kubota bought the patent and sells the same or similar mower now.
 
Definitely depends on the model. No reliable sources of new parts for the older models like the KM241/281/321 but there are discbine boneyards out there where you can get used parts, and bearings can usually be cross-referenced at a bearing house.

The downside to those older machines is the segmented plastic (nylon?) conditioner rolls. They get brittle and come flying off. Even if you find replacements they're old stock and just and just as brittle, so it's not worth replacing them. They made steel repair sections that clamp on over the conditioner shaft, but you need a LOT of them to replace the plastic.

Ideally you'd find one with the steel conditioner rolls, but there seems to have been a lot more with plastic...
