excite wire

My diode is not going get here until Thursday so i wanted to see if the alt would work I hooked up[ all the wires except the excite wire I have it coming from the coil hot side I mom touched it to the terminal on the alt and it charged right away but if I left it there it would kill the motor. Maybe I should not use the hot side of the coil for feed. Also without any excite wire If I rev the motor of the 460 up it will charge but not at idle.

A 10SI or Hitachi should not kill the engine if left hooked up direct. In fact it should keep the engine from being shut off!!! What alternator is it. Did it do that more than once? A parking lamp as a resistor works. Jim

Yes it does it every time I touch the wire to the alt terminal it makes a big spark like your grounding it out It is a 10S1 alt on a Farmall 460 tractor.

The Alternator is not good. Either the Diode trio, or the rectifier diodes have a short to ground. If it was new, take it back if used and on hand, you can replace the bridge and Trio and regulator pretty cheap, but a guaranteed alt is about 45 bucks. Jim

I agree with Jim, your dying woes are likely caused by a problem in the alternator. You can use the power to the coil to excite your alternator but let me add this. Looking at the parts page for a 460 it shows it has an external resistor before the coil. So you should place your excite connection on the side of the resistor not going to the distributor. This way you assure you are exciting the alternator with full battery voltage. It may work fine the other way, but may as well have it as correct as possible.

Are you SURE you are connecting the "excite" wire to the power source/switch side of the coil and not to the distributor side?

I was thinking the same thing Bob..
take you a piece of wire tie it to the excite wire and run it to the plus post on the battery see what that does

Yes I was. I returned that alt yesterday and the new on I was able to connect the excite
wire tot he coil OK It must have been internally shorted like Jim said. However the new one
I got charges over 16V they told me to return it today and they would chick on their
machine.
