I have a Farmall "M" that had the head redone before I got it, it had/has a miss that I can not find the cause. I have the valve cover off, everything is working there, compression is about 100 lbs on all 4 cylinders, all electronics are new, including a distributor cap . Number 3 misses, it comes out wet and cold. I change the plugs and still number 3 , even tryed a new plug, It has compression, spark, I see a spark when its out of the tractor, and gas, I can not figure out what can be wrong. And help would be heaven sent. Thanks for reading

Spark out of the tractor should be sharp, crisp, and blue.
What about plug wires? What about the rotor?
Can you swap in a distributor from another tractor that runs well?

Have a guy on the RPM forum that rebuilt a 806 LP, best of everything, got done and it ran on 5 cylinders. Rechecked everything, tested plug wires for continuity, still missed on one hole. Played with points, valve clearance, carb, still missing on one hole. A new distributor cap finally fixed it!

Has it always missed since you have owned it? Since compression is good on all 4 cyl, can that still mean the problem of manifold that JAN mentioned?

I will check the intake manifold to see if its leaking, I didnt think of that, Thanks to Janicholson and 55 50 Ron and all other replys

Try a baling wire around the plug porcelain. Then put a small loop for the wire to set on. See if that fixes it, if so then your plug is the problem. The gap by the tip of the plug, makes it need more spark to jump thus making the plug fire.

check to see if the distributor shaft isn't bent. We just got a Farmall 130 running this weekend and was not firing on 2 cyls. Tried everything and scratched our head a bit. Figured out the center shaft was bent causing the cam lobes to not open the breaker points on those 2 cylinders. Swapped distributors and it runs perfectly now.

I think Jim and Ron are sending you down the right path. How do you use this tractor? Is it just a collector/ show tractor or does it actually do some work? If not worked much, just dinking around with it adds to the plug fouling when it is idling a lot with that lean mixture going to that cylinder. You can check the sealing of the manifold by aiming an unlit propane torch or spraying either at the manifold where it mates the head. A change in how it runs will tell you if you found a leak. However, this will not tell you if the manifold is burned through between the intake and exhaust. That can only be verified by disassembly. Also I don?t know how you determined it is number 3 cylinder but you should be able to confirm that cylinder 3 is firing by running the engine at a higher speed say half throttle or more. Then pull number three plug wire out of the dist. cap, if the engine sound changes you know that cylinder is firing. The difference is at idle there is a lot lower flow of air..fuel mix and the additional air or exhaust leaking in leans the mixture more then at higher rpms. I?ve said enough, hope this helps.

I bought this tractor from a friend, he used it to bale with, but said it had a miss at an idle, it missed at all speeds, but did smooth out at higher RPMS. I wont use it to farm, just go to a tractor show or 2 and a parade. I will check the manifold Friday and let you know what I find, I really appreciate all the help

i was reading your post. i do not understand exactly what you are telling the feller to do with the wire. wire around the plug, then circle, then _____. hmmm

pull the coil wire out about 1/2 inch so you can see the spark with engine running, and see what that does. and when your speaking electronic's ? is that the points and condenser or actual electronic ignition???

Makes it jump a gap in wire.I have seen solid core wires cut and stripped back with a clothes button spliced in the wire so spark has to jump across the holes in the button.

Try running it in the dark,if you have a bad plug, wire, cracked cap it my show up with a nice light show. Make sure that your plug wires are routed correctly. I chased a miss/miss fire, on my pu for several hours, it was a bad wire, but I crossed the new ones at the cap putting them on(I know better and did it anyway. :)

I dont know what was done to the head, he just told me it had a valve job done, but I remember him saying after that it had a miss at idle, after it was done. I am afraid I will have to take the head off, Again, thanks for all the help
