1466 IH slow to get oil pressure

Have a 1466 IH that is slow to get oil pressure on the gauge. Tractor has been overhauled about 700 hours ago by an IH mechanic before I bought it. Guy that owned it said it was always slow to get oil pressure. If it sits for a couple of weeks it will take 30 to 40 seconds before oil pressure comes up on the gauge, and top end of the engine will rattle for a moment, when it is getting used every day it still takes 20 seconds but no noise. Has good oil pressure after it starts, about 60 pounds, and hot engine at an idle will be 30 pounds. Seems like all the oil drains out of the filters when it sits very long. The oil filter housing has a nut on the right hand side of it, that I took off and all that is in there is a spring about two inches long. Is there suppose to be a valve of some sort in there? Any ideas whats wrong? Thanks.

A gauge with air in the line can cause that. If it is electrical gauge ignore this. Bleeding at the gauge can cure it. Jim

Definitely sounds like the pump isn't keeping prime. It should be addressed and quickly else the bottom end could suffer a great catastrophe. There are two orings, a wear sleeve, and a seal in the pump. Also a gasket on the pickup tube. Any of those could be an issue. There's also the pressure relief valve and another valve on the oil filter housing that could be to blame. Case IH has really good parts information. You can also get the same info from their MyShed android app. You have to look up the DT-436 engine separate from the tractor. Below is a screenshot of the oil filter assembly from the schematic. Hope this helps.

I think I'm missing some parts on oil filter housing. I took the hex head fitting off and all that is in that bore is a spring, nothing else. Thanks for the diagram.

it is possible that you have the wrong filters or a malfunctioning oil filter. IH filters are mounted with the head down. after the merger with case it was discovered that the case filters would fit the IH tractors and were cheaper. the case filters were mounted head up so they were always full of oil. the IH filters had an anti drain back valve so they would stay full of oil. so when the case filters were used the oil pump had to fill those filters before the oil pressure came up. i would suggest asking about the anti drain back valve where you get filters.

The valve in the filter base is the bypass so oil can go around the filters with cold thick oil or if filters plug. I for sure would want that valve in there and it may well be just kind of hard to get a hold of to get it out. But, without it, the oil will go right on around the filters.

On the drain back valve in filters, you can look in the bottom end through the holes or slots and there should be a diaphragm and also a tube in the center.

If filters and base check out, I would be checking the suction tube. Might be gasket failure where it is bolted to front cover.
