Farmall 130-missing problem

I have developed a missing problem mowing yesterday after about an hour.I just put a new coil on
when the old tested bad.The tractor got to where it would'nt start so I checked everything with
tester light.I wonder if this coil is too hot.The Lady at the parts store asked me if it had an
external resistor,which it does.and has been converted to 12 volt.This evening I mowed about 5 to 10
minutes and it did not miss. When I shut it off the coil felt very warm.I don't know much about coils
but after I put it on the ampmeter went all the way to the right or plus side and jumped back and
forth a little while then settled but still not centered. Can anyone tell what could cause
this.Thanks for any help.

Charlie

If the coil is so hot that you can't hold your hand on it, then I feel that is overtemp.

Coil is one possibilty but I'd also look at other ignition components as well for health and possible replacement.

The amp meter was just telling you that the battery needed a minute or two of higher charge rate, no issue there. I am not certain if you replaced the coil before or after it ran poorly. If it is running well now, and you are worried about excess heat. The simple answer is that the coil is subjected to heated air from the radiator and fan, as well as conducted heat from its mount on the engine, and its running heat. If you could keep your hand on it for 10 seconds or so, or longer, it is just fine. Failing ones get nasty hot. If you have an amp meter, the coil will draw about 4 amps (engine off) measured with a hand held meter in series with the coil supply (disconnect the coil at the supply side, and test between the wire and terminal Key on, points closed) Jim

I replaced the coil before it started missing. The old one was bad for sure. After I put the new coil on it started and ran fine for an hour or so.For this reason I believe the plugs wires and points are ok but condenser maybe bad.

Could be a shorted to ground wire where it goes through the side of the distributor. With the wire going to the distributor disconnected from the coil, see if there is continuity between the wire and ground when the points are open, then when closed. If contenuity all the time, it is shorted to ground in the distributor, or bad condenser. Jim
