Yesterday I mowed/brushogged a 3 acre field. It worked fine. Today i used it to brushog, and it ran like __ap. It wouldnt run smooth, it backfired, didnt have any power, threatened to die continiously. Sounded like it was out of time. Any ideas??

Running lean will cause that as will a sticking valve or maybe the points slipped

Moisture in the cap, or old's ideas, or distributor cam with a loose bearing (if you can wiggle the shaft (sideways or up and down it is too loose). or fuel supply issues. Jim

Did you leave it sit outside, did it rain? I would try this, it won't cost much.Take the distributor cap off, spray the inside with WD-40, wait a minute and wipe out the excess. There may me minute cracks in the cap that retain moisture, and WD-40 will displace it.

backfiring from carb or exhaust pipe? or missing? all different. fuel supply, timing, wires, cap, rotor, plugs, valves.

It always sits outside. I have sprayed the gap where the cap fastens to the distributor with a sealent a long time ago, and I keep a piece of plastic over it, but I sure will try your idee. Thanks.

I did run it on the lean side for brush hogging, but I ran it the same way the day before. Im done mowing, so I cant test that idea out.

Running lean can cause some major problems like burned valves and holes in pistons

so the timing is retarded and carb set too rich. have you checked the timing then set the carb.?
