super C not charging update

Well I put a 6V battery in and still no charge unless I grd the F. It is a 3 brush gen the VR is mounted right under the gen, The light sw is just 3 positions OFF- B-D. The way I look at it is that either I have got a bad VR the new on is exactly like the one I took off. or some thing else is wrong. What I don't understand is what causes the VR contact to pull in. the C/O contact pulls right in. I don't know how to troubleshoot any more.
Thanks

The VR relay (of the two in the housing is normally directly grounded through closed points. There may be 2 sets of contacts on that relay, but the one that stays closed when the engine is off (the upper one), is the active set. Thus when the VR is grounded to the tractor engine (it must be for it to work, check for a perfect ground to the regulator frame) the contacts ground the field circuit. When the voltage is higher than intended (by the settings of the gaps and spring tension) the contacts open and let the ground circuit flow through a resistor to lower the charge voltage. The process is random and pulsed DC control. Very electronically noisy. But the average current causes the average voltage to be correctish. If yours works when the field is jumped to ground, your regulator is not putting the connection through the points to ground (as it should). It is not likely the points, it is likely the regulator ground. Jim

Janicholson , you really spoiled it now as every one will read that and know exactly how to test, and repair their charging system. I liked the paragraph telling about the different materials used on positive and negative points (which I have mentioned more than a few times) in the regulator and that explains why most of today's regulators are short lived as they are sold as either or negative ground.

I just looked at my reply and in the last sentence I meant to say for use in either positive or negative ground systems.

We had those Delco Remy books at the dealer and the later ones also that got into the voltage regulator that used dual contacts in the voltage regulation. It was a upper and lower contact setup. They got a little trickier to adjust. We had a good tester though that would simulate fully charged battery or near dead battery so you could make accurate voltage and amperage output adjustments on the vehicle.

Jim: Thank you for the information. I went over this am and made sure that I had a good ground ran a wire from the positive battery terminal to the VR frame. It still wouldn't work unless I grounded the Field. You could see the contact trying to move a little.I took that VR back and got another one will try it this afternoon. Maybe i do not have the correct vr but it is exactly like the one I took off. 4 terminal 6V + grd same mounting holes. Could It be that the gen is not compatible with this VR. It appears that it is not grounding the field with the voltage contact closed.
Thank you

With the regulator in your hand, not mounted, use an ohm meter,or continuity checker to make sure the F terminal and the frame of the VR have no resistance. They should be connected together inside. Zero resistance or close. If infinity, it will not work. That terminal grounds the Field of the gen, just like your jumper wire! Jim

Jim: Thank you. I put the 2nd new one on this afternoon and it starting charging right away. It must have been a bad one off the shelf. I got them at the Big R store.Only thing it doesn't charge really high only about 6.7 volts. maybe that's because of the spring tension or air gap that you were talking about.I wont put the 8V battery back in just use 6V it spins it over good on 6V.Maybe all the trouble was worth it because I have learned a lot and feel more comfortable around VR,s now thanks to all of you,Thanks again Jim.

You are welcome. I learned it from a master mechanic as a transition was happening to electronic components. Jim
