Run tractor with no battery installed

I put a mag on my cub and plan to start it by crank. Does it hurt to run it with no battery installed?
The field would be grounded thru the regulator calling for more generator voltage but the bat terminal would never be satisfied with no battery to charge.
I read 7 volts at the generator output with either the battery connected or not connected. Would that put a load on the generator if it never connected to the battery?

Disconnect the wire from the "F" terminal on the generator and it will no longer produce output with no where to go.

I got the hood on now and it takes me over an hour to put it on and off!
I guess I would like to keep the generator in place. It is hard or impossible to disconnect the field with the hood on for me.

So long as the ungrounded battery cable is secured so it cannot accidentally touch grounded metal, you will be fine running with no battery. (I've done this myself on a few occasions with no issues.)

Without a battery the cutout - or the cutout relay in the regulator if your cub has a voltage regulator - will still pull in at operating RPM. But since there's no connection to the battery there will be no load applied to the generator.

Disconnect the field wire from generator and then ground the armature terminal of generator with a wire. That will eleminate any voltage build up in generator due to residual magnetism in field pole shoes.

Why not battery it with a mag? You can have lights and starter that way, crank if the battery is ever down.
I guess I don't get it, your resale value will be better with everything functional also.
