helped friend split tractor today to replace ring gear yhat he bought from here...would not go on,,heated in oven an torch.....was to round an fly wheel was a little oval....oid ring matched flywheel.....ended up turning old ring gear over an went right on......what do you do in that situation.....especially if old ring gear was wore out on both sides........would we of had to replace flywheel...................thanks dewy

You need the torch to remove the old one and then again to install the new one Doesent take much heat but you do need a oxy-ace torch and go round and round with torch to heat entire ring when installing. Propane is useless cant get heat even. Hold the new one with vice grip so you can go round and round to heat even

we were useing mapp gas to remove,,,did not have ace/oxy..torch at his house....also had in oven ,it was hot....also had mapp torch on it...i guess we needed blue flame..........i will tell him...........dewy

I try not to deal with aftermarket ring gears after having a couple that simply didn't fit, FIAT probably still has them, look up the part number on the official website and do a 'net search for a "NOS" OEM part.

WHY would you waste $$$ torch gas to remove a ring gear if intending to scrap it and replace it with a new one?

A chisel between teeth whacked a couple of times with a hammer makes quick work of removing a ring gear destined for scrap.

I put the flywheel in the freezer over night and the ring gear in the oven at 500 degrees and let it sit in the oven till the temp come up to a full 500. I then pull the flywheel out of the freezer and grab the ring gear as fast as I can and drop it on. I've had a coupe that would almost fall back off if I had not had the flywheel on a flat surface

If you have good luck doing that I can't argue too much but Cat says max heat on a ring gear is 400F.

I have done a few over the years on diesel engines and never had a problem getting one on. Of course they were all OEM gears and not some unknown after market brand.

Actually the first time I put one on I was thinking I screwed up as it seemed too loose! Then a couple minutes latter it was nice and tight.

I always would take a brass punch and tape down after they cooled off to make sure they were seated on the lip of the flywheel.

Years ago, my Super C would not start due to a dead spots on the ring gear. I pulled the starter off and spot welded on to the missing teeth and it has started like a champ ever since.
