574/2500 pto shaft-540rpm

My brother bought a 2500(574) with a bushhog, that had not been unhooked in years, with only 1200 hrs on it. While greasing it, he noticed the pto shaft moved in and out about 1 inch. I have helped to replace 2 of these shafts, and my buddy was able to reach in from the bottom and remove and install the front snap ring. I think this snap ring is broke/missing on my brother's tractor. My question on this is-can the snap ring be accessed by removing the mcv? I thought once upon a time someone posted that it could. Hi Mark, did you check the the snap ring on the rear bearing of the 540 PTO shaft?
