got in a hurry...

Like a duffis I got in a hurry trying to remove the stuck piston rings and I was doing ok until I got to the last piston. I got all the rings off but while trying to get the compression ( top) ring my screwdriver got a little off and slightly got into the piston. Is that "death" to that piston? Is it ok to just replace one piston or should I replace all 4 ?

thanks for your help

i did not describe it correctly ...in tapping the screwdriver with the hammer it got off course and damaged the outer most portion of the groove ( "widened ' it)..not full depth, just the outer portion... not sue how to do the picture thing... electronically challenged

If the ring land was bent, it will keep the second ring from fitting when going together. If the new rings fit into the grooves with .001 or less clearance above it (feeler gauge) and if a new ring in the second groove fits without binding, I would run it. Replace them all, not one. The engine is balanced by having all pistons and rods the same weight. Jim

I'd bet that if you clean and deburr any damage you've done, it'll be fine. If the ring grooves got damaged, you could use a ring groove cleaner to fix it.
If a person needs to replace just one piston in an engine, the replacement must start out the same weight or more than the other pistons. If it's heavier, you can use a die grinder to lighten it up. A few grams difference is close enough.

Guess I would want to know what your plans are for this engine.

Is it just going to be putting around maybe doing some parade work or hauling a hay wagon for Hay rides each fall?

Or are you going to be farming 1,000 acres and pulling plows 10 hours a day in the spring and other heavy work year round?
