Figured out why the Loboy is not running....

...just need to know what is the causing it.

This tractor will not run if it has gas in the tank. I pulled the hood/gas tank back off today and rechecked to make sure the new coil had not gone bad on me. Had good spark all around and whilst checking the second cylinder it tried to fire up. So I figured put some gas in the IV (temporary tank on IV stand) and give it a try...no go. Finished checking cylinders...all good. Thought I would recreate the time when it wanted to start, so I dumped the gas and tried her dry...fired right up and ran for like 10 seconds. Put gas back in the IV...no start. Dumped the gas and tried again dry...started right up. This time I quick poured some gas in the IV and it died immediately.

So there is no gas coming out of the air intake when I leave it off which makes me think the float is OK but perhaps set too high? Seems like if the float were saturated or there was crud in the valve that it would overflow out the air intake. Any other thoughts? This is kinda fun running down these issues.

IV is a piece of 4" pvc with a cap for a bottom drilled to hold a nipple and rubber gas line. There is nothing on the top. It is open to the air. Tractor has this gas issue with both IV and with its gas tank.

Since the carb seems to be overfilling with gas, how is the choke going to improve the situation? Doesn't that just cut off the air? It acts like it is not getting enough air...and that is with the air filter bypassed. You have me really confused with that one.

Just whizzing in the wind, but I suspect its an issue with the float being set wrong or crud in the needle/seat. With no fuel, except whats in the carb, there is too much pressure, albeit light, to let the float open enough to fill the bowl. In the process of taking the IV/gas tank loose, that pressure is released allowing a small amount of fuel to gt by the needle putting a small amount of fuel in the bowl, allowing it to run a few seconds before that fuel is gone. Or, its ding it because of crud in the needle/seat. It was running, and since running you may have stirred up something in the tank. Make sense?

Yes, I am thinking along those lines. Pulled the carb today. Have it sitting on
my desk for evaluation tomorrow.

Well it is either getting too much fuel, or too little. If too little, the choke would make a difference. If black smoke is rolling, there is too much, if it passes thrpugh just enough to not enough, (possible needle restriction) choking would change it! Jim
