H or m Farmall

This might be a dumb question. Looking at M Farmall for sale I notice there are about 3 different types of seats! I always thought the seat with the tin tool box under it was 1939 and 1940. I see some tractors advertised as mid 40s but they have that early seat. Also I always thought if the shock was on the rear of the seat it meant the tractor was a 1946 or older. I have a 1940 m and the seat shock is in the front just like my 1948 m. So I guess they had the two types with shocks and there was no rhyme or reason which one was used. Just wondering.

The earliest difference is the groove in the platform that the pipe can dip into. Later Farmalls had no groove. Seats were pipe with the sheet metal tool box in most early tractors. Better seats were available and who knows what has been transplanted. Jim

The 39 and early 40s had a trough on the trans cover, and the frame was more or less heavy sheetmetal. There was also the pipe style, and the one with the small shock. The one with the long shock was a dealer installed aftermarket seat assembly.

Seats could have been changed by the owner over the years also. My 43 had the pipe frame seat and it rusted through and broke. Mine now has the newer style seat. My 43 M already had the newer style seat when I bought it.

From start to sometime In Feb. 1940 only one type seat was used. Then to 1947 the seat with thick spring between operators feet was used. Also the standard seat through production. In 1947 the hydraulic seat attachment with shock at rear was available from IH. In 1948 they changed the hydraulic seat a little and moved the shock to under the seat. Some early transmission top covers after the slot top only had two bolt holes instead of 4 for seat mounting into 43 if I remember correct. From Feb. 1940 to end any of seats other than first type will work. At one time the hydraulic seat attachments were sold with the foot starter switch brackets that went on the steering post.

If I remember correct this picture is from 1948, train wreck with factory shipment of tractors with shock at rear of seat.

I would have swore the assembly with the long shock was later than the small, and it was not an IH seat assembly. I have no clue where I read that. Why does that assembly not show up in the parts book, or does it?

The Easy Rider seats (with shock absorbers) were an option - either factory or dealer installed. They were installed on virtually every color of tractor out there. New parts are available for both mid-shock and rear shock arrangement.

Not pictured but you can find the part number break in parts book at the hydraulic seat assembly. Notice the shock, frame and some other parts shows a parts break. Has the start serial number on a M of shock under seat. It shows the other type from end of slot top up. But Don't think it was available as a attachment from IH until in 47 or no earlier than real late 46. Don't show up in a parts book until after 47. Don't know how much parts book printings lagged behind part use dates.

(quoted from post at 06:22:01 08/09/19) I would have swore the assembly with the long shock was later than the small, and it was not an IH seat assembly. I have no clue where I read that. Why does that assembly not show up in the parts book, or does it?

The only seats built by IH were the 2 different early styles of pipe frame seats. ALL of the others were built by Monroe, and Monroe made seats to fit the early John Deeres, The N series Fords, and also Massey Harris. The Monroe seat with the long shock found a home on a lot of John Deeres as well as the earlier Farmalls. The Monroe seat was available after market several years BEFORE IH began installing them at the factory, and even then, the Monroe seat was an extra cost option.
