Alloy Gear in a C Transmission

I have the tranny cover off my C to replace the shift fork springs. I was inspecting the transmission gears looking for any obvious problems. I discovered that one of the gears was some alloy and not steel. I looked the gear up on the Case/IH parts list and it is shown as the fourth gear. I then looked on line for salvaged gears, they were all steel. Has anyone else seen this and what purpose would an alloy gear serve.

That ALLOY GEAR is a grease/ oil slinger and was mainly for moving more oil/ grease while under heavy loads in the lower gears . Ya find them in the A's thru C's and most are ELSCRAPO . Are you going to be plowing and heavy discing all day day in and day out ???? if not then don't worry about it.

Thanks Tractor Vet. I was wondering what it was for. I took another look at the Case/IH parts diagram and there it was big as day. I am using this as a pulling tractor so it is definitely important in this application.

I thought that gear was for slinging grease/oil mainly for stationery pto or belt pully operation.

I was told it was for belt and stationary PTO work. Those tasks don't drive the output shaft, and thus can starve the rear of the transmission. If it is good. leave it alone if it is bad, or teeth gone, it will make nasty noise. For pulling I see no necessity for it. Jim
