584 Hydraulic lube transfer pump

Can someone out there offer some information or share any experiences concerning this pump? What is it's purpose (other than lube), and what are some symptoms of a failure or lack of performance of the pump?

It seems the concept was used on a number of IH models over the years so I would expect that at some point someone has had problems develop and witnessed the effects.

Anyone??

I recently worked on a cx100 CIH. The transfer pump's inlet screen had collapsed, and caused the main pump(on the mcv) to starve. Jimb2's link explains how to test this. Basically one compartment over filled itself while the other ran low. That transfer pump sucks to replace. Mark.

Hi Mark, never worked on a CX model CIH, do they have the same trans/diff as 85/95/32XX/42XX?
Could you replace the transfer pump by removing MCV and right cover by PTO clutch?

I ran into an issue concerning this pump on a McCormick tractor a year or so back. Can't remember the model, but it was probably 100 hp or so with a four speed power shift. It had sheared the key on the drive gear and the pump stopped turning. I was able to get in to the PTO clutch area, remove the output shaft(I think) and slip the clutch back far enough access the gear and replace the key. The pump wouldn't come out from that direction. It must go forward into transmission housing and out that way.
At first I thought I could split the rear housing away from the transmission but it wouldn't come apart that way. Found out it had to split at the engine first because of a shaft through the transmission and a snap ring or something like that.
Was able to put it all back together with the new key and it went back to work. I still don't understand much about the total function of the pump, but spoke with someone a day or so ago with some hydraulic issues that suddenly appeared on his 584 that made me think this pump may be related to the problem. Hence the questions?

Hi, go to,

https://www.redpowermagazine.com/ then click on discussion forum board link then click on General IH link then search for link 784 Hydraulic Issues and click on it is currently the 3rd item down from top on page 3.

You do not have to be a member to read the posts on redpower but same as here only members can post.

It does have the same(for the most part) tranny/rear end. It's a long story, and actually 2 of us worked on it at times. There were other issues as well, wrong with the tractor. My buddy has smaller hands and is younger, and he was able to reach in thru behind the mcv to remove the pump. My hands physically would not fit. And there was an issue with the new pick up tube on the new pump. We removed the gear thru the bottom cover. I am not sure-we debated other ways of accessing the pump-what would be an easier/better way to get to the pump.
BUT, the failure was obvious-you could fill the housing with hytran, and run it, and it would read low on the dipstick in a minute or two. Let it sit, allow the oil levels to equalize, and the hydraulics would work for another minute or two. Mark.

Okay, I got the link to work on my wife's computer(which went right to it), found and printed the pages concerning the transfer pump so I now have that information.

Thank you
