Just curious. I see an F20 for sale hopped up to be a puller. I vaguely remember the Regular Farmall only having two main bearings. Did either the F12, 14, 20, or 30 have 3 main bearings?

Many 4 cylinder tractors had 3 main bearing early on for obvious reasons.

I spent quite a few hours driving my uncle's Regular and then his F20.

F20 & 30 both had "Guaranteed for Life roller main bearings", they were huge! So impossible for them to have a center main bearing. Not sure what your CIH dealer would say if you wanted him to warranted the main bearings today, probably "No".
IH used really strong forged crankshafts, with over 300,000 Farmall M's made and used and abused, I have only heard of ONE broken crankshaft and SEEN one other, belonged to our next door neighbor, head had been given a 1/8th inch cut during an engine rebuild a year or two before. Small miscommunication with the machine shop. Boss I worked for two summers was listening pulling 3-14's along the creek across from our ground, said it sounded great, then just like you pulled the plug on a radio it went quiet. Minute or two later he saw his son walking up the furrow to go home for lunch, then figure out what went wrong with his M. Someone on the RPM forum said they saw a broken M crankshaft decades ago. Seen a few holes in H crankcase from thrown rods, always on the left side of block.

While inspecting the engine in the F-20 I just bought, I found out it was overhauled at some point. The pistons stick out about the top of the block about 1/4" and it had a steel head gasket. I don t think the head has been shaved, but I don t know for sure.
This was a dual fuel engine, and still has the distillate manifold, but I am wondering if they put taller pistons in to get more power with gas only.
What was/is the popular method of upping the compression on these engines?

My 1940 M has a big patch welded onto the engine block, right behind the governor. I'm guessing at some point in the Ms life, number one rod made a hasty exit.
