OK...this is a little off subject, but how many of us tractor guys are also military, retired military, veterans of foreign wars, etc??? I have seen a few posts indicating some of us are and I was just curious.

I'll start...I was active Army from 1988-1992 and have been in the Reserves ever since. I was a platoon leader during Operation Just Cause in 1989 (the invasion of Panama...You may not remember).

Let's hope things get better between the US and China. I predict that our relationship will deteriorate and we may find ourselves in direct conflict with them in the next 5-10 years....perhaps a bit like 1951-1952 all over.

God Bless the USA...BB

Probably one of the few DRAFTED for Viet Nam that will answer this or can that lived through the time. Drafted prior to the lottery, and spent 13 months in Nam in 66 & 67. (stayed an extra month to get out of the army 3 months early) In the 100th eng co which was a float bridge co as well as other bridge repair. Spent most months running convoy to all parts of the place bringing supplies over land, as our trucks where large. Also spent 3 months TDY with an infantry platoon doing river patrol and setting up for night ambush in the delta, as we also had boats of which I was an operator. The only benefit I can say I gained from the experience was learning at a very young age how short life really is, and to enjoy every minute of every day your alive. As well as don't take life to seriously as you won't get out of it alive any way!!! If only coming home we could have been treated half as good as those coming home from China will be. Looking back, the harassment after coming home was almost as bad as being there. Amazing how the news media controls our lives isn't it. Thank god for the forgiveness of a good tractor.

He saw a lot of fighting all across France includeing the Battle of the Bulge. I new he was in the war but had never spoke of it till the 50th ann. of WWll and I asked him some questions about where had been and what he had seen. He told me many stories and many more he wouldn't speak of. I am very proud of him and would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you that sacrificed that I might not ever have to do and see the kind of things that you went through. Your courage made this a safe place for me to raise my children. My had hat is off to you and I thank you all.

USAF 1955-1975. 1 year tour in Viet Nam (Phan Rang AB)during my career. I was an aircraft maintenance person, B-36,B-52,C141,C-5. C123's in Nam. Final four years in AF spent instructing acft. Maintenance. Worked civil service till last september, C-17's and many others during that time.

Grew up on a farm. We used mules to farm a 100 acre farm. Then we got lucky with a Farmall "M". I loved it. Today I have a 42H. I want to get started on it soon. Time and facilities are the current hold up.

Air Force for 4 years, '70-'74. One year at Phan Rang AB, Viet Nam, and 6 months TDY on Guam during the so-called 11 day war, when we were bombing the crap out of North Viet Nam.....

I didn't do so bad on my first restoration. It was an H also, 1940. I bought an H parts tractor, took alot of stuff off it, and sold alot of parts locally. I ended up costing $2400, but it only has implement paint, not Urathane...

Okay, BB - U.S. Army, 1965-1969, then got the idea that maybe I should switch to the Navy and see the world! U.S. Navy 1969-1973, stationed aboard the USS Guam (LPH-9), a helicopter carrier with a Marine Battalion Landing Team (2000 men strong and their supporting air wing)on board. We were the first ship in the world to launch and recover the Harrier Jump Jet and I was fortunate to be on board when that happened. Supported the Lebanese government during their civil war with the PLO in 1970 - served as the primary recovery ship for the Army MASH units in Lebanon at the time. For thanks, we got strafed by the Israeli Air Force - nothing like the Liberty incident, but scary nonetheless. Thanks for the post Bama Binder.

I'm a Viet Nam era Vet, US Navy 1972-1975 was Stationed abord the USS Prairie AD-15 for most of that time '73-'75. I was Also in the Calif. Oregon and Arizona National Guard for about 10 years after that. I'm now starting my first Tractor restoration a '48 Farmall H. This project has blown way out of proportion since it was just susposed to be a good running tractor whan I bought it. Ha Ha, was I fooled, seriously it does run. But I'll never be happy till it is perfect I guess.

BB,

I was in the Army from Aug "59 to Jul '62 as a fuel and electrical repairman. Stationed at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Fort Meade and then Korea for 16 months. Went back into the Army in '68 and went to flight school; flew Cobras in Vietnam and Cobras, Hueys and OH-58s in Germany, returned to the States and went to IFE, and IP school. Then stationed at Fort Bragg and Fort Drum flying all the above plus T-41's and T-42's. Went Civil Service in '79 and flew Hueys, a U-8, a YU-21 and a pair of R&D Cobras out of Picatinny Arsenal for the Army for about 2 years.

Have a small beef farm in central NY (about 100 acres) and work for the local municipality. Collect a lot of different brand tractors with Case, MM and IH being the most numerous.

Interesting to see how many of us are Vets. Hope China affair cools off. Best of luck fellows!

Roger

Sorry I didn't get to the USS America until 1978. But if a "Fleet Marine" was assigned to a Carrier's Security force he definitely had "his stuff in one sock" as we said in those days. The Gun Boss on CVA's was the department head under which the Marine Detachment's fell administratively. We also owned the magazines that held the 'stuff' the Marines were guarding so we got to know most of the grunts pretty well, good group of grunts for sure. Bet your dad was too. D-2

I probably yelled at you over the 5MC to get your helmet on! The flight deck is the most intentionly violent 4 acres in the world and no place for the untrained. The potential for death and destruction, to our own, never ceased to amaze me. So you a mine man, F-14? D-2

That's good flying time. 1.3 was the normal T-38 mission with the yanking and banking and traffic pattern crunch and gos. Cross country wise I had a couple of 2.0 plus. A couple of instructor clowns in our squadron logged a 2.6 and landed on fumes. They got grounded for a long time! I racked up 1,700 hours in 6 years which was about average.

Sgt USAF. Was in from 65-69. Electrical power production, Oregon, Germany, Libya. Was in charge of the night repair crew at the power plant in Libya when Gadiffi started the revolution which threw us out. I really wanted to fill the engine cylinders with concrete, but we had to leave peacefully.
The China thing worries me. We knew that they consider that area their space, even though it is farther out than the line we draw around us, but we went in anyway. I prefer diplomatic solutions. War is not good for anybody except the people who make war tools.

VFW Life member, Located in the Red Sea during Operation Desert Shield / Storm as part of maritime intercept forces, stopping merchant ships and inspecting cargo headed towards Iraq. Used the knowledge I gained in the Navy to get employment at Gas Turbine power plants. I work a 12 hour shift and have half the days of a month off, leaves alot of time to play with tractors and buy more, though the wife really doesn't like that much. I have a Super C 1953 and an Oliver OC-3 1951.

BB, Thanks for the post. For me it was the Navy for a 30 year career ('66-'96). The last eight years was as a Command Master Chief. Was CM/C of a VP Squadron that was first into Desert Shield with Maritime Patrol assets (P3-C's). Very similar to the one that sits on Chinese soil right now.//FB
