I have a farmall 400 s# 8526. It currently has a 1957 368 Lincoln v8 on propane. The TA is out. My wifes grandfather put this tractor together. He said he wanted more power. I would say this is the reason for the TA problem. How difficult is it to fix the TA? Is it cheaper in the long run to exchange it? Chances are I will never have the tractor in a hard pulling situation. If I did I would not use the TA because of the horsepower. So is this even worth my time? Also, the Lincoln still uses the IH flywheel. I need to replace the starter engagement gear. Is this a readily available part?

I have been told a dealer rebuild of the TA on th 400s and 450s costs $3,000. If you don't need the TA, keep your money.

You can do it yourself for under $1000 and that includes seals and the whole works.

Thanks for the info. I think I will buy a video of the repair and see what it is all about. I'm a full time JD mech so I will be doing the repair myself.

Get yourself an I&T Manual for it. It will take you through the whole thing. It really isn't that bad of a job, just takes time to get the tractor split down.

Son, your gonna drive me to drinkin' if you don't stop drivin' that hot rod Lincoln.
Sorry, I just couldn't resist that.
Others can confirm this, but, I think you have to split the tractor to replace the TA. It can be done in a home shop, but you will need to have the equipment to handle the heavy pieces safely. TA's go out on stock tractors too, sometimes from misuse and abuse, sometimes they just wear out. If the gear you need is the one on the starter, it should be available at a local starter/generator shop, at a Case/IH dealer or from one of many aftermarket sources.

Picture this. Two headers coming straight up on the side of the hood, where the holes in the hood were now is 2 intake pipes going into a collector, the tractor is about 1 foot longer, when the engine is brought from idle to high idle and back again it puts a foot flame out the headers, a wide front end has beed added, the rear wheels are hub mount duals, there is a big old Mallory tach on the steering column, the hydraulic pump was modified and now is driven off of the front crankshaft, the hood was extended, and it all looks like factory work. If you didn't know better you would think it was made this way.
