Hey guys , I got an A I was told was a 42. The serial number plate is gone. The number on the engine is 6342 DA so I am assuming it is a 42 right...

No. Look for a serial number on the flat surface below number 1 spark plug. That will tell you the engine serial number which will be the same as tractor if it is the original engine.
Look for date codes on major castings, engine, transmission etc. Will be one of two numbers for day when two digit for month then a letter y year code. Letter I is 1939 so 1942 should be letter L. Each set of digits is separated by what looks like a slotted screw head.

(quoted from post at 00:06:03 07/23/19) Okay serial number is FAA-799

Please verify that there are no more digits than 799. Use a wire wheel on a grinder if needed. Reason is, they started at serial number 501 in 1939. The early ones matched the engine serial numbers, and the early ones also had the serial number plate on the brake pedal guard cover with the plate facing forward just below the pedals. If yours is in fact #799, it is a very early 1939 model and should also have crank start (no provision for an electrical starter).
