Advice on Painting Front Axle A

I have been incrementally painting my A and want to now paint the front axle. I already have everything between the front and rear wheels done. I wanted to know how manageable the front axle was if I wast to take it off and paint it (wheels off of course)? I would jack it up under the bolster and remove the pivot pin. I would rather not mask things off and paint the axle separate so I can get under it and do a much neater job.

You will need to disconnect the steering. How do you plan to keep the front of the tractor up?
Last year I had to replace the radiator and rebuild the steering. The. I had the front axle off I supported the tractor under the transmission.

There is a jack-pad at 6:00 on the transmission bell housing. Block the rear tires and use the jack-pad for lifting the tractor's front end.

I will jack it up under the bolster with a farm jack. I have done this many times. I would not have to touch the steering because I would just remove the axle assembly. My enquiry was to see if it was super heavy and very cumbersome.

Sorry, just re read, there is no jack pad on my bell housing. There are only two and they are on the rear end.

If you use a high lift type jack, you really really need to block the tractor with jackstands or wooden cribbing. (never concrete blocks) Put them under the bell housing at the back of the engine. The axle will try to flip forward or backward. putting it on jackstands before lifting the tractor off of it will keep it upright. Expect wear in the pivot pin/bushing. Jim

Thanks, is the axle manageable for one person. How much would you guess or know it weighs?

Just had one off couple weeks ago. I?d advise you not to do it yourself!! It?s not real heavy but very clumsy when the steering is off. Then you have to try to hold the axle and then lower the tractor to get the pin lined up! I?m middle age and I won?t do it again unless I use some kind of lift on the axle itself! Don?t get hurt!

Wheels off probably 220 pounds. I would not manage it, I would not try to lift it, I would just get the tractor up off of it about 8 inches. This avoids having to remove the steering linkage. Jim

That is the answer I was looking for. I am 50 years old and work out regularly. BUT... yes it doesn't take a lot to get hurt. I guess I will mask everything off. May get a paper cut at the worst.

That is probably the safest and smartest way to do it. No one is going to lie down on their back and crawl under the tractor to check if you missed any spots on the axle above the center pivot. If you did remove the axle to paint it, you would need some well padded slings to re-install the heavy axle without scratching the soft fresh paint.

Years ago I had a Super C front axle UPS'd to me from half way across the country. It was taken off the tractor at the pivot pin, then shipped without wheels & hubs. As I recall it weighed in at about 150 lb total. It was shipped in the 3 main pieces, roughly 50 lb each.

I'd just brush paint it. Give it two coats. For the second coat use one of those foam rubber brushes and sort of dab the paint on. It will look as good as if you sprayed it--no brush marks and no need to mask everything else off.

Don't use a hi-lift type farm jack. Those things are dangerous and jacking up one of these tractors can be tricky with the offset weight. BE CAREFUL!!
