Preassurized Radiator on a Cub

Should the radiator on an international Cub be pressurized? Replaced the radiator on my cub about 2 years back and now I have a gasket leak at the water outlet elbow. As I recall the old radiator had just a cap which was not pressurized. The replaced radiator cap is pressurized and I am wondering if this is what caused the gasket to fail. Thanks for your response.

how can you have pressure without a water pump. Water does expand when warm but the overflow in the neck will let it flow.

The gasket just failed, make a new one or buy one. The pressurized system is just fine. The engine doesn't care, and the radiator is made for pressure. Pressure causes the boiling point of the coolant to increase 2 to 3 degrees per pound of pressure. So a 7 psi cap (7psi X 2.5) will increase the boiling point about 18 degrees.
Many tractors with convection cooling (no water pump) make noise and bubble after working hare and can spew out coolant when stopped and shut off. The pressure cap reduces this substantially. Jim

The water is trapped below the neck by the valve on the radiator cap. The neck on the radiator is the difference. A 154 Lo-Boy has a pressurized system... no water pump
