To pull start it. Ive had 2 batterys on it. One off of my pk. Wont do a thing. Ive taken the wires off the starter button and bolted them together, nothing. ive tried pulling it, nothing, Ive loosened the starter and jiggled it around. Nothing. Im putting up hay, and it was running fine till it quit

Does it have a battery ignition of a mag?? If it has a mag no you do not need a battery but if it is battery ignition yes you need a battery that is fully charged

If it is a coil and points (as old indicates) it needs a battery 12v with a 12v coil, or 6v if a 6v coil. If the generator is working, it will not need to be a charged battery. If it is not getting spark. (maybe why it quit) fix that first. Jim

What part of, IM IN THE FIELD MAKING HAY DID YOU NOT SEE??. Sides, I dont know anything about starters.

Your right, and I got it from a girl on U Tubes. Brushed up the cable where it clamps to the tractor. Works perfect now. Dang, I hate to admit this to men LOL

I know you're in a bit of a panic mode because you're trying to get work done and your tractor quit, but that doesn't help us read your mind when you provide such a vague description of the problem and don't answer the questions asked by the people who are trying to help you.

There are 50 different possible reasons for the tractor to quit. When you say "nothing" describing your attempts to start it, that could mean 50 different things too. You really weren't giving us much to work with.

Glad you got it fixed but I get this vibe from your post that you somehow blame this forum for having to get your tractor advice from a girl, and hold us in contempt to a certain degree.

Next time take a deep breath, and try to help us help you.

The girl on U-tube is a pretty valuable source of information. I just watched one of hers on changing a Cub clutch before I got into it even though I've done that sort of stuff before on other tractors.

Barnyard Engineering you hit the nail on the head. I didn't answer because it looked like previous
posters had it covered with their questions about Magneto or Battery ignition. I know almost all 48
H Farmalls had battery ignition and that would require a battery to run or at least a dead
one with good connections so the generator could provide current when giving it a good pull to
start. But, no one got answers back so difficult to be of much help. Hooking the starter switch
cables together , well that kind of told us he did indeed need some help though.

well they need a good battery and good cables with clean ends in order to turn the engine over. im quite sure I knew this at or before 10 years old.

I DONT BLAME ANYONE HERE AT ALL. Thats nonsense. I just happened to think of U Tube and watched
it. I learn way more by seeing a thing done than reading about it. I just would have been a bit
more happier about it if I had got the info from some grizzled old farmer fart LOL

If it don't crank over I bet the starter gear got jammed on the flywheel that's common. Just put it in 5th gear and rock the big tires.

It amazes me how a SMALL, almost non existent piece of corrosion can cause a battery to fail to make connection and not start.

I had the same thing a cpl yrs back...tried almost EVERYTHING....then took off the ground cable from the frame and saw a TINY speck of rust...hit it with steel wool and cranked right up.

Glad you got her running...get ur hay in!!!
