Cub Starting Issue

Hello: I have 53 Cub. Will not start/turn over. New battery, all wiring has been thoroughly checks and all connections are clean. Tractor was running perfectly. Shut off to fuel the tank. Went to start the engine. No clicking, no noise, no turning. Battery well charged. Just went dead. Any ideas? Appreciated.

Can you turn the engine by hand? If not then the starter is locked against the fly wheel. That happens on old Farmalls when the ring gear get worn. Pulling the starter, moving the engine a quarter turn and
reinstalling the starter is the short term fix for that problem. If you can turn it then maybe there is a loose connection at the battery. Any chance you have a replacement battery cable end that clamps onto
the cable - I've had them come loose before. Do you have lights and if so do they work - that would tell you if you have power. If you have power then maybe something happened to the starter. A volt meter is
real handy for tracking down electrical problems. You can have the battery checked for free at an automotive parts place if you think something happened to that.

Like Charlie said just rock the tractor in high gear, with the ignition off. Should hear a pop when it releases. Then just start it up. If not then loosen the starter, wiggle till it comes loose then tighten and start.

If you have the hand crank for it try to turn it over by hand. If it will turn by hand then the starter is not locked in the ring gear. If that is so try a jumper wire right to the starter if it does not have the saddle type starter button. You also might tap in the starter and then try to start it. If tapping works the brush in the starter are going bad

As 47fivewindow mentioned, you may have to take off the "shoe" that holds the rocker arm which engages the internal contact. File the slots in the "shoe" longer so the contact can move closer to the copper post which is underneath it.

As always disconnect one side at the battery as there's live voltage and fat wiring involved...chances for big arcs.
