Trans fluid

Got a 1965 656 gasser. Got the I&T ih202 shop manual. Maybe over looking it but the dipstick on top plate between clutch and seat is the transmission fluid correct. Shares with the hydraulics? What fluid recommendations use? Thanks

Yes, and yes.

You really should spend a few bucks on an owner's manual. The I&T manual only covers repairs, not maintenance. Originals and reprints can be found on... ebay.

Oil should be CaseIH Hytran or New Holland Mastertran as it's called in a blue bucket. It's expensive and the first thing everyone asks is if there is something cheaper. You can use whatever you want, but that's what's recommended.

My own opinion is, if you want to use something cheaper, at least use something that says it meets Hytran standards or MS-1209 on the side of the bucket. If it was a newer tractor with a real powershift, I would insist on Hytran or Mastertran, but this is a rather crude old tractor by comparison, and there is nothing exotic inside that requires the special additives you won't find in the cheap "compatible" oils.

I?ve run ATF - Dextron in the trans

No wet clutches or anything that needs a speciality
Lube

Just gears and a hydraulic pump

I have an extra 656 owners manual, it's a new reprint if you are interested.
