Question for Pete23

A few days ago, we were discussing that goofy hydraulic fitting under the battery of my 656. It needed to be tightened but the tube nut was seized. Not wanting to disassemble the complete tractor to remove the fitting, I cut that fitting above the tube nut with a Dremel. I was then able to back out the nut and remaining tube. Side note, the darn thing is discontinued so had to have it welded back together and of course the tube nut is now free.

Question(S). Did you know that "Y" fitting has a restrictor in it? Has about a 1/16 hole in the restrictor to allow oil through. Did you say that fitting draws oil from the sump if no power but still needed steering? Because, if this thing gives me trouble again I'm going to eliminate that fitting, connect the hoses, and install a plug in the hole.

Thanks for your response.

Have to confess that I am somewhat confused on the real purpose of that T fitting. I do know it is in the return from oil cooler and that lubricates some drive parts. I know it has an orfice other wise the majority of that flow would just dump through that fitting leaving little to lubricate other points. But, some how I have the idea the hose being below oil level it's purpose is to replentish the power steering with a dead engine. Some thing like the sump check valves purpose in the mcv of larger tractors. I was thinking some one else might chime in.

Don't have any experience with the fitting in question, but I can tell you my non running late 1968 656 had no steering at all when I had to pull it a short distance yesterday. Had to steer it with a 2?4 between the narrow front.
