706 Rear Hydraulics Problem

I have a 1967 Farmall 706. I suddenly developed a problem with the tilt on the bucket - the raising and lowering of the bucket is controlled by the outside lever and hoses that connect in front of the floor plate on the right side. The tilt is controlled by the inside lever using two hoses that connect at the rear of the tractor to the pump under the seat.

I connected the hoses that control the tilt to the quick connects on the right side that I normally use for the raising/lowering. The tilt then worked fine. They hydraulic oil level is full and I replaced the pilot valve about 6 months ago. The pump under the seat has been leaking hydraulic fluid slowly for a while.

I would guess the pump under the seat is the culprit. Are there any specific valves or any part of the pump that I could check or should I just replace the entire pump?

Thanks in advance fellas!

I meant to add the bucket tilts slightly in each direction when I try the lever, but it does not move very much in either direction. Not sure what that indicates if anything.

Sounds to me that you got two hose crossed.BTW,the "pump" is under and behind the clutch pedal. The remote valves are what's under the seat.

I connected the hoses for the tilt to the quick connects for the lifting just to verify the problem was not in the hoses and/or rams. I put them back the way they are supposed to go and the lift works fine, but the problem persists in the tilt.

Would a bad load valve cause this problem?

Do you have two cylinders on the bucket tilt? If so try looking at the cylinder hoses to be sure the top of one is not connected with the bottom of the other. Jim

Another thing is the couplers when they get old they can malfunction letting oil flow in one direction. I believe a 706 Is not new enough to have the levers on the couplers to turn for on off unless someone has changed it. good advice below.

There are two cylinders on the bucket tilt. I have not messed with them or their hoses and they have worked fine for several years. I can swap the hose connections at the back of the tractor to see if that makes a difference, but I believe the only difference is the direction of tilt when you push the lever forward or backward (i.e. hooked up one way, bucket tilts down when you push inside lever forward and if you swap hoses to quick connects, bucket tilts up when you push inside lever forward). Right now when I push lever forward, bucket tilts a little and stops. When I pull lever backward, bucket tilts a little and stops. It does not have full range of tilt - problem is in the system that has to do with the quick connects that come out of back of tractor under the seat. The raising and lowering works fine.

TO determine if the couplers are at fault, change the lift couplers with the bucket couplers on the tractor. If the problem follows the couplers, there it is. Jim

Since you swapped couplers with them and it worked did you try the lift lines in where the til ones were? If you did and it lifted then it is in your couplers. If they only work on the one side then it is your couplers. Change the tilt ones and try again.

Well, it must be the male ends of the couplers. I hooked up to my disc to see if it would work and it raises and lowers the disc with no problems at all. Thanks for the idea fellas, I appreciate all the input!!!

Once when using my 756 with round baler the lift gate suddenly quit working. No up, no down . I swapped hoses to the other set of couplers supplied by the other valve ( has two aux. valves) on the tractor. Same problem. I determined that problem must be in male tip. Replaced both with spares I had on hand. Fixed problem. One male tip had gone bad for some reason.
