Mowing with a 450 D

Hi all, looking at a 9.5 ft. cut Woods pull behind mower, (heavier duty, heavy blades, not a finish mower), just looking to see if any have used this tractor/mower combination, and their experiences, or is the mower too big for the tractor?

Depending on what you are wanting to mow you may not be able to run around mowing in 4th gear, but 3rd gear probably is doable. Boss I worked for part time in High School had me mow 40 acres of permanent pasture that had been pasture for 20-30 years. He had a Deere 4-row rotary cutter/chopper or bushhog, 12 ft cut. I was down creeping along in 2nd & 3rd gear with his 4020-D. Dad got an IH #25 fully mounted Fast Hitch rotary chopper when he bought our 450 gas. Chopper was a BEAST! We chopped corn stalks with it for a couple years, would fly right along in 4th gear, did a good job of chopping stalks even at 7 mph. Chopper was only 5 ft wide cut. Would have been nice if it cut 3 or 4 rows.

I have a 15 ft bush hog brand flex wing cutter that I pull with my 400 (4 1/8 pistons) I have no problem cutting in 4th if it's not too tall (sharp blades take less hp) Plus you have lower gears and a T/A if it's real thick and tall. I realize I'm pushing the limit pulling a mower that's supposed to take 50 hp minimum. You should have no problem with something smaller.

I pull a 2-120 that's 2 spindles and 120 inches of Woods Mower, with a Super MTA, Like Brome grass in the ditch, when it bends under the front axle,It's gets too be to much, for the engine, 1st gear, Low TA, but that's thick, I would say a 450 would work pretty nice!! I will sell my mower, the renter, now mow's the roads !
