I am going thru one of these, learning as I go. The tractor came to me with a rigged up LP carb and regulator. I got ahold of a factory setup, acquired economizer, low pressure and high pressure diaphragms and reinstalled all with a new vapor hose. At first, it started and ran well with factory settings, just had to go out a bit on the main screw. Now, the last couple days, it won't run without partial choke, on either vapor or liquid. Open the choke and it's like I turned off the key. I'll pull the regulator back apart and double check the lever adjustments and seats and diaphragms. Maybe the diaphragm sealant I used doesn't work.

Are there any other troubleshooting suggestions.

Thanks, Chris B.

Retightened the manifold bolts, carb bolts and changed the LP filter. It is wanting to idle better and I have it running off choke now. I may still pull the regulator apart and double-check the lever measurements this weekend.

Thanks, Chris B.

Double check the ignition too. Propane ignites at a higher temp than gasoline and needs a healthy ignition system. Make sure coil is not wired backward, especially if there was other things rigged up on the machine. Try bypassing the ignition resistor so the coil gets a full 12 volts at all times and see if that makes a difference. I can't remember if 450 has the bypass on the starter to get full 12 during cranking.

I set up the LP for 12V while cranking, just like my gasser. I will try constant 12V will a jumper and see what happens.

Seen in the manual the LP calls for .015 plug gap vs. .025 for the gasser.

Thanks, Chris B.

Have you checked the filter between the tank and the vaporizer? People never change these and they do get clogged with fine rust dust from the tank and/or goo from back when propane could have higher percentages of non-propane stuff in the mix.

The tanks don't rust like a gasoline tank but they do get some slight surface rust left over from when they were made and little bits of moisture that get in.

That is one of the few things I haven't looked at. I just picked up some Baldwin LP filters. I'll check that.

Thanks, Chris B.

It sounds like a vacuum leak after the carb. That would account for the need to choke it to run. Jim

Another observation: it was idling too fast and moving the governor bellcrank wasn't slowing it down much. When I opened the main fuel adjustment, it slowed down but was way more than the specified 3 3/4 turns out and closing the choke still killed it. I didn't mess with it after this.
